API 5L X42 / X52 / X60 / X65 / X70 Line Pipes

Global standard for oil, gas, and water transmission - Available in PSL 1 & PSL 2 specifications for high-pressure pipeline systems.

API 5L Line Pipe Technical Overview

API 5L is the international standard specification for pipes used in transporting gas, water, and oil in the petroleum and natural gas industries. It covers seamless and welded steel line pipes. The grades are designated by their minimum yield strength (e.g., X52 means 52,000 psi yield strength). Steel Emporium offers these in two product specification levels: PSL 1 (standard quality) and PSL 2 (high-integrity with mandatory impact testing and stricter chemical limits). From X42 to X70, our line pipes are engineered to handle high-pressure environments, sour service, and offshore conditions.

Understanding PSL 1 vs PSL 2

PSL 1 (Standard)
  • General quality for common applications.
  • Chemical and mechanical properties are loose.
  • Traceability is not mandatory throughout production.
  • Impact testing is NOT required.
PSL 2 (Premium)
  • Mandatory **Charpy Impact Testing**.
  • Stricter limits on Carbon and Manganese.
  • Full traceability from melt to finished pipe.
  • Higher weldability and toughness for critical service.

Frequently Asked Questions

PSL 2 is a higher quality level that requires mandatory Charpy Impact testing, stricter chemical limits (for better weldability), and full material traceability, whereas PSL 1 does not.

The number represents the minimum yield strength of the pipe in kilopounds per square inch (ksi). X52 means 52,000 psi, and X65 means 65,000 psi.

Yes, but they must meet the additional requirements of Annex H (Sour Service). These pipes are tested for Hydrogen-Induced Cracking (HIC) and Sulfide Stress Cracking (SSC).

Yes, API 5L covers SML (Seamless), ERW (Electric Resistance Welded), and LSAW/SSAW (Submerged Arc Welded) pipes to suit all diameter requirements.

PSL 2 is mandatory for offshore and critical onshore pipelines because of its guaranteed fracture toughness and ability to handle severe environmental stress.
